One of the best looking bookshelf speakers on the market. These Monitor
Speakers were designed as a reference standard for near field studio monitoring
or serious audiophile listening in smaller environments. They are a smallish
330mm high X 234mm wide X 272mm deep box with cherry wood veneer lacquered
sides.
Using KEF's reference range 160mm bass/midrange driver with a 25mm dome
tweeter plonked in the middle these speakers have a true frequency response of
75Hz to 20kHz (-3dB). A good subwoofer is necessary to elicit the ultimate
reproduction (I run mine with an M&K) and when set up correctly with a
reasonably compliant amplifier it would be hard to imagine a better or more
accurate reproducer of vocals and instrumentation.
Recommended amplifier range is from 30 Watts to 175 Watts although I wouldn't
recommend anything below 60 Watts (I believe in stress free speaker coils).
For those of us into multi channel audio or Home Theatre, the KEF C100Q uses
the same driver compliment so as to make the ideal Centre Speaker.
The only caveat I have in recommending the RDM 2's is the fact that in a
large room the sound gets "lost". Originally I had them in my rumpus room
(around 10 X 6 metres) and couldn't get the sound I wanted. I then moved them
into my media room (about 5 X 3.5 metres) and the difference was amazing. All of
a sudden the music came to life, the imaging was spot on and even at elevated
sound levels (I am an old rock and roller after all) there was no distortion or
break up. Certainly they sounded as good as my Electrovoice MS 802's (no longer
made unfortunately) and better than anything else I've tested this year although
I have ordered a pair of RDM 3's which are currently on a slow boat from England
and hopefully should be better still.
Retail on these speakers are $2450 pair with the test pair being available at
a good discount when my RDM 3's finally get here.
