Well, the new Mordaunt-Short range is certainly one of the more attractive speakers on the market today. Consisting of two 5.25" aluminium alloy mid/bass drivers, a 1" aluminium tweeter and a side firing 10" woofer they provide a slim profile only 180mm wide whilst being fairly deep at 350mm and 950mm high. The frequency response is quoted at 35Hz to 22kHz and whilst I can't confirm the top end (my hearing drops off at around 14K) I can tell you that the bass goes nowhere near 35Hz (unless they're playing silly buggers and quoting -12dB figures). I figure the -3dB point to be around 50Hz which is pretty lame for a 10 inch "long throw" woofer.

Again, I suspect they have taken liberties with the sensitivity, unless our measurements are out (and in this store, anything is possible) we figure about 88dB rather than the quoted 90dB.

Now the good things - the vocals are crisp and clear with seamless crossover to the midrange drivers. The power handling is prodigious and would suit high volume applications. Quoted power rating is for amplifiers from 15 Watts to 200 Watts. Whilst I'm not totally convinced about the use of aluminium as the driver material, it's ability to dissipate heat buildup and therefore improve power ratings is obvious.

The Mordaunt-Short 908's would be an ideal speaker for Home Theatre in conjunction with a good subwoofer or a stereo speaker for Jazz and Classical music listeners. It lacks the "slam and kick" necessary to be recommended to the younger Techno  and Dance music set without the addition of a subwoofer. RRP on these speakers is $1999 although good discounts are usually available.
