This is the
musicians supergroup, every member is a legend in his field. Originally with
Steve Howe on guitars, John Wetton (King Crimson, Roxy Music, Uria Heap,
Wishbone Ash etc.) on Bass and lead vocals, Carl Palmer (Emerson Lake and
Palmer, Atomic Rooster) on drums and Geoff Downes (The Buggles, Yes) on
keyboards, Asia was a studio group producing top quality Harmonic Rock. When
Steve Howe went on one of his Yes sabbaticals, guitarist Pat Thrall stepped in
(Automatic Man, Jimmy Barnes), the guy is a magic guitarist, maybe not as
technically adept as Steve Howe (but then who is?) his stage presence and sense
of timing however is alone worth the price of this DVD.
Part of the Classic Rock Legends series recorded in
England (1991) primarily for TV, the Asia concert is as good as I've heard for
guitar driven soft rock. The track listing includes Sole Survivor, Heat of the
Moment, Open your Eyes and Only Time will Tell. Recorded in Stereo (do we really
need music in surround?) the mix is mainly vocal and guitar with the keyboards
and bass somewhat recessed. The overall effect is one of good sound staging with
excellent clarity although the drums seem to be miked only for snare and
cymbals.
This DVD was not at at what I expected, it's heavy and
rocks way more than I imagined Asia could. I played it twice the first night I
received my copy of it, the second time twice as loud (it sounded twice as good
that way). Thoroughly recommended.
