This bottom of the range subwoofer from Jamo should be an absolute piece of
crap. It's made of lightweight chipboard, weighs less than 7 kgs, uses a nasty
8" driver and has a built in 70 watt amplifier. So why am I bothering to review
it? Well, for some strange reason it happens to sound good. I guess Jamo got to
be the worlds 4th biggest speaker manufacturer by doing things right and making
an inexpensive subwoofer that is good for both music and Home Theatre.
Sure - it ain't no Paradigm PW-2200 but there
again it ain't $2300! All equipment has to be looked at in regards to it's
purchase price, after all, there's no "best of" only the best "value for money"
This little box (346mm X 315mm X 345mm) has
adjustable crossover and level controls. The bass response would appear to go
down to around 32 Hz which for a $499 subwoofer is quite exceptional.
It's not going to rock the room whilst
watching movies, but placed in a corner (which effectively doubles the bass
output) it certainly adds to the movie experience and offers tight bass
extension for music.
Where the budget is tight and there's not a
lot of room for a big box, the Jamo E4 Subwoofer is one of the very few
subwoofers that I can recommend to play with music as well as movies. Currently
discounting to around $399, this is an excellent buy.
