out of 10? - Yes folks, this is the DVD. If the laser could burn a groove
into a DVD disc this one would be in shreds. It's not the greatest in terms of
sound (2 Channel Stereo) or picture quality but Steve Harley's performance and
those of his supporting musicians transcends all that.
Recorded in 1984 after Steve's unsuccessful attempt at a solo career in the
U.S. he resurrected Cockney Rebel and laid this performance on in the Camden
Palace Theatre, London for 60 minutes of musical nirvana. The sound mix is
absolute magic with a musical balance better than most studio albums.
There aren't enough superlatives to describe the backing muso's. The twin
guitar playing on Here Comes the Sun and Make Me Smile makes Wishbone Ash look
run of the mill. (This may have something to do with the fact that one of the
guitarists is playing an Ovation Guitar exactly the same as mine thus leading to
some bias on my part).
Harley obviously loves playing to the audience and infects the other band
members with a sense of fun and enjoyment rather than the "Just Another Gig"
syndrome. It's this sense of theatre (not to mention his voice) that landed him
the lead role in Phantom of the Opera later in the '90's.
Best known for his hits (Come up and see me and) Make me Smile, Here Comes
the Sun and Judy Teen, there's lots more to rock to and ballads to listen to.
Harley's story telling via music makes multiple listening a must. A good
subwoofer is required to get the most out of the bass lines which are well
defined and clear cut. This is not a one listen DVD, you need to give it a
couple of shot's then you will be humming the melodies throughout the day
waiting to get home play it again.
