This DVD is one of the first concerts that was specifically made for the DVD
format and as such it stands out against most other offerings in terms of
picture quality and sound. The concert was filmed using super 16mm rather than
tape and the results on a good screen are obvious. Sound is mixed in Dolby 5.1
and the soundstage is excellent with only subtle use of surrounds but prodigious
use of the LFE channel (just how I like it).
The intro. uses a piece from a company called Animusic and really has to be seen to be believed (almost worth the price of the
DVD alone).
Kansas have been around since 1970 when
schoolboys Kerry Livgren (guitar) Dave Hope (bass) and Phil Ehart (drums) first
played together, in 1971 classically trained violinist Robby Steinhardt joined
and then in 1972 the lineup completed with the addition of Steve Walsh
(keyboards/vocals) and guitarist Richard Williams. In 1976 the release of "Carry
on Wayward Son" catapulted them to stardom and from there they never looked
back.
The current lineup hasn't changed except for
bass guitarist Billy Greer replacing Hope and Kerry Livgren who left to pursue a
solo career. All the favourites are on here including Dust in The Wind, Carry on
Wayward Son, Point of Know Return and others. Steve Walsh's voice sounds a bit
strained at times but overall the music is exciting and well mixed (the band
brought in a separate recording console for the mix rather than just run it from
the front of house).
This Kansas DVD is on the Must Have list and
would be a worthwhile addition to any collection.
