KRAFTWERK
It's
almost impossible to review this DVD objectively. Unless you're familiar with
KRAFTWERK and their music (?) it's kind of hard to explain.
I'll try -
Kraftwerk started as a two piece (person) German
band in 1967 with Ralph Hutter and Florian Schneider playing (or
programming) computer/synthesizers and outputting some of the most "way out"
stuff you've ever heard. As 70% of the vocals are in German, you might think you
wouldn't understand the lyrics, but as 100% of the vocals are "mechanized" it
really doesn't matter 'cause you wouldn't understand them no matter what
language they were in.
Somehow or other Ralph and Florian are still
together and along with Fritz Hilpert and Henning Schmitz, Kraftwerk went on
tour in 2005. If you think the sight of four aging men standing behind
computer/synthesizers doing heaven knows what to them and barely moving a muscle
sounds weird - you ought to hear the music!
For full appreciation of this DVD you need a
large display panel (you'll know why when you see it) - a bloody good subwoofer
(you'll know why when you hear it) and a large supply of mind altering substance
(bourbon in my case but could be anything).
If I'm sounding vague here, it's because the
music defies definition. I can't say it's one of those "must have" DVD's but it
certainly will give any A/V setup a complete workout. I bought it on the basis
of remembering their mainstream hit "Autobahn" and it sounds every bit as good
live as the studio version (although the term "live" here is ambiguous to say
the least)
There's a lot of visual interaction here and if
you're into dance music and dance parties, this could give the night a real
kick. Certainly the young duff duff car maniacs will love it.
As for me, I just stared at the screen, turned up
the volume and sat through the whole thing mesmerized. It's worth purchasing
just to see what your system will do.
Come to think of it, after 2 hours of this DVD,
you really don't need any mind altering substances - the sound and vision will
do that for you. |
