The Monkees
- Well I remember them anyhow. They were a group formed in the late '60s just
for a TV series. Trouble is, non of them were musical. Sure, Davey Jones could
kind of sing but that was it. As time progressed, Davey's voice improved and
Mike Nesmith turned out to be quite the all round musician. By the end of the
series he played guitar very well, sung with more style than the others and
wrote some very good lyrics. Due to the fact that his mother invented "White
Out" he was never short of a quid either.
When the Monkees parted, Mike did several projects in the
musical / comedy vein. My first Laser Disc imported from the States was called
Elephant Parts and was a Mike Nesmith concoction of music and musical comedy
(you had to be there).
One of Mikes next projects was a band called The First
National Band which was a kind of Country and Western (ish) outfit. I loved
them.
This is a DVD of the concert performed in 1992 at an
outdoor festival in Jacksonville, Oregon. There's music from his Monkees day's
onwards and the recording is fantastic. I could sit and listen to this DVD over
and over, which is a good thing as the picture quality is - if you don't mind
the odd expletive - shithouse. No other way to say it really. Sound is in Dolby
Digital 5.1 although there's very little surround information.
Not really a disc for old Monkees fans, more for people
who just enjoy music and meaningful lyrical storytelling. I've watched this disc
around 20 times and still look forward to it's next play.
