Gary Numan - Classic Rock
Part of the very successful "Classic Rock"
series of DVD Concerts, this performance by Gary Numan is interesting. Recorded
in 2002, this has to be the worst video quality I think I've ever experienced.
The saving grace, however, is the music and quality of recording. You really
need to be a Gary Numan fan to justify buying this DVD as people not familiar
with his work will be slightly mystified.
Gary Numan exploded on the scene in 1979 with a
form of synthesizer driven rock similar to Human League and Depeche Mode, 27
years later, he's still touring and still sounds the same (which is not
necessarily a bad thing). He had two mainstream hits with "Cars" and "Are
Friends Electric?" both of which are performed at this concert. The hair
transplant is better than Bert Newton's - but not by much, if you ignore the
wayward tufts then he still looks early 30's and has the energy to match. The
vocals are powerful and the two backing girls well worth a look (if you're that
way inclined).
This DVD needs to be played loud, actually bloody
loud if you want to get the most out of the performance. It's certainly not
reference quality but has a certain nostalgia that doesn't come through on some
of his other, more clinical, concert DVD's.
I guess this is one of those "Take it or Leave
it" DVD's which, if you find it in the $9.99 bin would be worth grabbing. I
wouldn't pay $20+ for it though. |
