How do you
do tribute to a showman like Freddie? You don't! Everyone in the concert tries
very hard and most entertain but no one does it like Freddie. At his most
mediocre he was superb, at his best he was - well, the best.
Having said that, this is a very entertaining concert
utilizing just about every interesting muso. around including David Bowie, Roger
Daltry, Elton John, George Michael, Liza Minelli, Slash, Annie Lennox, Bob
Geldof and more (plus the original Queen members - Roger Taylor, Brian May and
John Deacon)
The performance was at Wembly Stadium on April 30th 1992
and the music was played in front of 72,000 ecstatic fans. The usual Queen songs
are belted out by Queen and various guests with varying success usually on the
better side of good, the coup de grais, however, is Bohemian Rhapsody aided (if
you'll excuse the pun) by Elton John and Axl Rose who doesn't exactly scream in
tune but is exciting none the less.
Although the audio mix is variable, starting off with
almost no bottom end and recessed vocals, to almost spot on by the end of the
concert, this DVD is a must for any Queen fan and would be a valuable addition
to any live concert loving person with a good A/V system (it doesn't work well
on cheap and nasties)
This is a two disc set with the main concert on disc one
and a TV documentary on disc Two which is well worth a look. Sound is DTS in 5.1
mixed with varying degrees of proficiency and involves the viewer as part of the
audience which means the concert can be watched many times while still retaining
that "fresh" feel.
The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert is almost a "Must
Have" missing out only due to the audio mix of the first 20 minutes.
